Sticky Date Oatmeal

Sticky Date Oatmeal

Oatmeal is the perfect hearty and comforting breakfast food. Or lunch food. Or dinner food. I could honestly eat it for three meals a day without complaint.

That said, I suffered through quite a number of bland, mushy piles of oats before realizing how adaptable and flavorful oatmeal could be.

I was first introduced to sticky date oatmeal while WWOOFing on a farm in New Zealand and it remains my favorite flavor to add to oats. The dates add a touch of sweetness and caramel color while cinnamon creates a toasty autumnal flavor that pairs well with oats. You can use any type of plain oats with this recipe (instant, rolled or steel cut), but steel cut will yield the creamiest, stickiest bowl of oatmeal.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup steel-cut oats
  • 2 medjool dates*
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. maple syrup
  • 2 cups plant milk

1. Remove the pits from the dates and chop them into small pieces.

2. Add all ingredients into a medium sauce pan and cook over medium heat until boiling. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook, stirring frequently, until oats are thick (about 20 minutes for steel cut oats or 5 minutes for rolled oats).

3. Transfer to bowl and top with a drizzle of syrup, fresh fruit, nuts or shredded coconut if desired. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks:

*If your dates are on the drier or firmer side, remove the pits and soak them in very hot water for a few minutes before chopping.
